(memory)

ensemble instrumental 1993/94-1995/96

[ky’ u’c_means Memory in Vietnamese, was composed in 1993 and revised in 1996.The score is inscribed with a descriptive statement, in French, that reads Dans l’abime profond du silence est le recrit regulier de la memoire (which translates as In the deep abyss of silence is the story of daily memory).Score for a Pierrot ensemble plus two percussionists, the music is hightly colorful, with the percussion in particular highlighted with temple blocks, various deep gongs, marimba, vibraphone, and thundering bass drum and timpani. The instrumental ensemble invokes a reverent Buddhist tradition when players clap their hands. This gesture is to wake Budda up so that one’s prayers and thoughts are heard. There is particularly seductive group cadenza with tremendous arabesques of sounds from the ensemble, blending and constrasting with improvisation and fixed notation]

“Nhip Don Nhip Kep (simple meter, compound meter) was written in April 2001, specifically for the Ensemble Alternance, which consists of a flute, a clarinet, a violin, a viola, and a cello. The piece is about 8 minutes long and divided into three unbroken sections. In sections A and B, I tried to combine the instruments so that these can be played  as a tight ensemble while retaining  their independence and equality. Part C is a mix of lines and meters … This piece  looks  back  into my childhood, when I heard a lot  of Vietnamese traditional music and was  surrounded with old songs. It also reflects a number of aspects of traditional Vietnamese music, which I had studied, such as the Ca Tru (an esoteric chamber singing tradition in North Vietnam), Hue court music (Central Vietnam), and Nhac Tai Tu (a chamber music tradition played by the “connoisseurs” in South Vietnam..”

Equatorial Rhythms Exhibition in Oslo_Norway, september 28, 2007

my home city_hanoi, is a daily growing city, the narrow streets with thousands of moving cars, motorcycles and bikes.., the cramped sidewalks are used somehow as irregular private parking-lots, food-courts, cafes, also shopping stores.., and both the street’s surface and sidewalk’s space sometimes employed to such as small or even large roadworks..

and so, all makes noises..

these noises as in a fierce storm, if you are there..

videoInstallation and noiseMusic

by vunhattan_noiseMusic/sound & brianRing_videoInstallation

the idea is to present a piece which references the issue of climate change as a major topic in the environmental debate
a four-channel synchronized video work would be installed (depending on the specifics of the exhibition space, the piece may be installed as a three-channel, or even a two-channel work). video would include images from the Bali conference, combined with images from local Hanoi traffic, especially exhaust pipes and fumes. Other images, directly or indirectly related to the theme of climate change, including CO2 emissions, and expressing hope and lament would also be used, as well as some use of digital effects
the images would be projected onto the four sides of a cube installed in the exhibition space. the cube would consist of strips of plexiglas suspended from the ceiling in such a way that they are free to rotate. the four sides of this cube of plexiglas strips would thus form the four screens onto which the video is projected. the observer would be confronted with fragmented images which would merge, interact with and affect one another and would cast their reflections into every corner of the exhibition space. in so doing they make reference to the complexity of the debate, the intransigence of some of the players, and the far-reaching effects expected, as well as the hopes and fears related to the seriousness of the issue

the video and installation are surrounded by prepared sounds based on the recorded street noises, also by a live noise performance using electronic devices and laptop computer, and all are the reflection of this too noisy and polluted city and also related to video’s subject, the moving sound and a heavy live noise performance will also work with the moving images and video installation in these interactive ways

(the rains)

stringquartet 2007

“the rains” was written during the four summer months in Hanoi, when the rain of the fence mixed phase clouds and storms. Summer weather in Hanoi is very warm, this is when the fan’s sound was mixed with the rain’s noise and also the noisy vehicles from outside preferred to mix the advertise goods on the streets.. “the rains” is formed during that time, this work has almost 14m in length with violin1, violin2, viola and cello all play as  independent but in a mix together, sometimes in as one, then separated in parallel play, work began a music features simulated folk songs, and then gradually expand and develop..

Hanoi, Hanoi.. and Hanoi

orchestra

2012

performed by Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra in Norwaygian Friendship Concert in Hanoi Opera House, Hanoi_September 25 and 26, 2012

Hanoi, Hanoi.. and Hanoi

is written for the VietNam National Symphony Orchestra, and is funded by the MIC Transposition Norway. The piece lasts about 15minutes nonstop, with no different movements separating or breaking

Hanoi, Hanoi.. and Hanoi resonate sounds and actions of the ancient city’s daily life, reflecting my feeling for the place where i was born and raised, and am currently living

Hanoi is expanding everyday, it is more crowded, and noisier, and more chaotic compare to the days i spent growing up

because so, the piece has many different tunes and melodies and rhythms competing to top one another, it is a song with blocks of different noisy and rowdy sounds mixed with the fantastic sound of piano

this is Hanoi..
