PUNKT Music Festival in NORWAY 2015

Punkt 2015: The Program
Kristiansand, 3-5 September
From a wide range of contemporary Asian music, via German electronic pioneers AtomTM and Robert Lippok, to Norwegian poetry interpreted by In the Country and Frida Ånnevik: Punkt 2015 may be described as this year’s most kaleidoscopic musical event.
Punkt regulars will be pleased to know that they can fill every minute with concerts on two stages, Live Remixes in three halls, seminars, a Punkt Film programme featuring video art, music documentary premieres and concert films from previous festivals, and an audiovisual installation.
Punkt 2015 will be arranged in Kristiansand on 3-5 September. Thursday 3rd is devoted to acoustic concerts at the exclusive Klubben concert venue and the opening of this year’s audiovisual installation at Kristiansand Kunsthall.
On Friday 4th and Saturday 5th, we expand to all seven halls at the Fønix Cinema: Concerts in Hall 1 and 4, double sets of live remixes in Hall 2 and 3, additional live remixes by University of Agder music students in Hall 5, music documentaries and concert films from earlier Punkt festivals in Hall 6, and works by video artist Peer Bode in Hall 7.
In addition to this, there will be daytime seminars in the Fønix Cinema foyer.
Focus on Asia: Sigbjørn Nedland of NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) has curated an exciting program of electronic music from Hanoi, Vietnam, consisting of artists Vu Nhat Tan, Luong Hue Trinh and Nguyen Xuan Son.
Another Vietnamese artist, Nguyen Le, has composed music for the Japanese silent movie «A Page of Madness», which he will perform live with a band consisting of Nils Petter Molvær, Jan Bang, Mieko Miyazaki and string quartet.
At the Klubben venue, young Malaysian pianist Mei Yi Foo, voted «Best Newcomer of the Year» in 2013 by both the BBC Music Magazine and The Arts Desk, will perform works by Unsuk Chin (South Korea), Dai Fujikura (Japan) and George Benjamin (UK). This evening will also include contemporary music for koto, performed by Mieko Miyazaki (Japan).
Dai Fujikura, who we first met when collaborating with him on David Sylvian’s «Died in the Wool -Manafon Variations», will also give a lecture at the Punkt Seminar and take part in a Live Remix.
From urban futurism to rural lyricism: AtomTM (Uwe Schmidt), the father of electrolatino, electrogospel, and aciton (acid-reggaeton) music, will bring his electronic music and live visuals to Fønix Hall 1, where also Polish ambient artist Jacaszek will perform his work «Catalogue des Arbres» (released on the Touch label) together with Kwartludium.
Morten Qvenild returns to Punkt with the release concert of his first solo album «Personal Piano» (Hubro), in a double concert followed by his band In the Country performing «Skogenes Sang» together with Norwegian «Grammy» awarded singer/songwriter Frida Ånnevik, based on the poetry of Hans Børli.
Dutch pianist Saskia Lankhoorn comes to Punkt with «Dances & Canons» by composer Kate Moore, taken from their debut ECM recording.
Punkt has had numerous offsprings abroad, this year in Prague, Paris and San Sebastian. From Paris, we bring the high-energy French quartet Vegan Dallas, and in Prague we met electronic wizard Floex.
In the luxurious Fønix Hall 4, there will be a duo concert by Fennesz and Arve Henriksen, a solo trumpet/electronics performance by newcomer Hilde Marie Holsen who recently released her debut album on the Hubro label, and a concert by Greta Aagre / Erik Honoré presenting new material and combining the performance with recording guest musicians for their upcoming album.
An abundance of Live Remixes: This year we triple the number of live remixes, allowing the audience to choose between several interpretations of each Hall 1 concert. Live remixers include Robert Lippok (of To Rococo Rot), legendary Danish percussionist Marilyn Mazur, British drummer Seb Rochford (Polar Bear etc.), Norwegian guitarist Bjørn Charles Dreyer, and more. Music students at the University of Agder will have their own Live Remix stage, contributing additional interpretations of the concerts.
Although we present a wide range of artists who are new to the Punkt Festival, the live remixers will also include familiar Punkt faces like Audun Kleive, Sidsel Endresen, Per Martinsen (Mental Overdrive), Streifenjunko, Sheriffs of Nothingness, Ingar Zach, and Eivind Aarset.
The visual aspect: Punkt has always focussed on the interplay between music, visuals and literature. This year’s exhibition, «Once also this was a mutation» by Aernoudt Jacobs (presented in collaboration with Kristiansand Kunsthall) is a continuation of this. The exhibition features recordings by Punkt poet extraordinaire, Nils Christian Moe-Repstad, and during the festival days there will be live performances in the installations by Moe-Repstad, Markus Schmickler, and Espen Reinertsen.
Video art pioneer Peer Bode comes to Punkt from New York, showing his video works in Fønix Hall 7, and he will also give a lecture at the Punkt Seminar.
The Punkt Film programme includes the premiere of Adrien Le Gall’s Punkt documentary which features interviews with Laurie Anderson and other artists, in addition to concert excerpts from Punkt events in Kristiansand, Prague and Paris. German director Ingo Biermann’s documentary about Maja Ratkje will also be premiered at Punkt, and we will show several full concerts from earlier festivals, including David Sylvian’s «Plight & Premonition» (Punkt 2011) and Three Trapped Tigers (2012).
The Punkt Seminar: Japanese composer Dai Fujikura and this year’s installation artist Aernoudt Jacobs are confirmed for lectures, further lecturers will be announced later.
